Vascular Dementia: Is It Really a Brain Disease?
A live research conversation with Dr. William R. Shankle, MD, neurologist and co-investigator on the Hemostemix vascular dementia protocol, and Thomas Smeenk, President and Co-Founder of Hemostemix Inc., on brain health, circulation, and what the science is showing.

WHY THIS MATTERS
What if vascular dementia has been misunderstood from the start?
Most people are told vascular dementia is a brain disease. Most doctors treat it that way. But the research tells a different story. At its root, vascular dementia is a circulation problem. Brain cells are being starved of oxygen because blood flow has been cut off. That distinction changes everything about what questions are worth asking next. This series exists for the patients and families who are still asking them.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
-
Why vascular dementia is a blood flow disease, not just a brain disease, and why that distinction changes everything about what questions to ask next
-
Why there are zero FDA-approved treatments for vascular dementia and what researchers are investigating to address the root cause
-
What ACP-01 is, how it works, and why its mechanism is being studied as a potential approach for vascular cognitive impairment
-
What the current research program looks like and how eligible patients can request a clinical research consultation
Dr. William R Shankle, MD, MS, FACP
Memory Disorder & Cognitive Impairment Expert
Dr. Shankle is a neurologist, neuroscientist, and statistician who has evaluated and managed more than 7,000 patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, former Director of the UC Irvine Alzheimer's Disease Clinic, and co-investigator on the Hemostemix vascular dementia protocol.
Thomas Smeenk
President and Co-Founder, Hemostemix Inc.
Thomas Smeenk leads Hemostemix, the company developing ACP-01, an investigational autologous stem cell therapy derived from the patient's own blood. He brings together the published research, the clinical data, and the plain-language explanations that patients and families need when standard medicine stops having answers.
MORE ABOUT DR. SHANKLE
Dr. Shankle spent four decades studying brain plasticity and degeneration, treating over 10,000 patients for neurodegenerative conditions. His research output exceeds 100 publications covering neurology, cognitive science, brain development, and mathematical psychology, with particular contributions to early detection tools, cognitive modeling, biomarkers, and treatment approaches. His active clinical research includes vascular dementia work, and he currently serves as co-PI on an NIH grant studying cerebrovascular injury.
Through his work with EMBIC, he created the MCI Screen, a rapid 10-minute memory assessment tool capable of identifying Alzheimer's disease up to two years before symptom onset, opening a window for preventive intervention.
Dr. Shankle holds a biology degree from Stanford and a medical degree from Brown. He co-founded UC Irvine's Alzheimer's Research Center in 1987, directing it clinically for a decade, then led Hoag's Orange County Vital Brain Aging Program for over 12 years. In 1997, he founded the Shankle Clinic specializing in memory disorders. He now holds the Voltmer Endowed Chair at Hoag and is co-PI on UCI's BEACON project.
