# Atherosclerosis: One Disease, Many Conditions

A vascular surgeon explains how one systemic disease shows up across the brain, the heart, and the limbs, and why it wears so many different names.

Dr. York N. Hsiang

Phase I/II VesCell (ACP-01) Principal Investigator · Professor Emeritus, UBC

*Disclosure:  Dr. Hsiang has a commercial relationship with Hemostemix Inc. *

WHY THIS MATTERS

## Why does the same disease get four different names depending on which doctor you see?

A neurologist sees vascular cognitive impairment. A cardiologist sees refractory angina. A vascular surgeon sees peripheral artery disease and limb-threatening ischemia. Different specialists, different names, different departments. Yet underneath many of these conditions is a single systemic process: atherosclerosis restricting blood flow, and tissue downstream starved of what it needs.

In this on-demand session, Dr. York N. Hsiang follows that one root cause across the organs it reaches, and looks at what the research is exploring at the level of the smallest vessels.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

- Why atherosclerosis is one systemic disease process, and how the same underlying problem gets four different names depending on which organ it reaches
- How impaired blood flow to the brain, the heart, the coronary circulation, and the limbs produces conditions that look unrelated but share a common root
- What happens downstream, at the level of the smallest vessels, when circulation fails and tissue is starved of oxygen
- What the research is exploring about angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels, at the site of ischemia
